FAIR ISLE GUIDE
Fair Isle is one of the Shetland Islands and the most remote inhabited island in the UK. Although small at only 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide, it has a huge character and friendly island community of around 50 permanent residents. The island is owned by the National Trust for Scotland with the social, ecological and economic growth of the isle supported by the Fair Isle Development Company.

George Waterston OBE, a world renowned ornithologist from Edinburgh, bought Fair Isle in 1948 and founded the island’s Bird Observatory. He sold Fair Isle into the care of the National Trust for Scotland in 1954. Read visitor information here.
